Weekend Getaway

The client for whom I’ve deprived myself of so much sleep these last few months has booked a weekend getaway for my family and I at a nearby resort this weekend. It’ll be a nice break before the Fall blitz of work begins in earnest. Next time though, I plan to have some help, which should result in more sleep, which is a good thing.
The new house is coming along well. Sunshine is happy with her swanky new washer/dryer and many of the boxes are unpacked. We’re very close to being able to park both cars in the garage — which will make washing them a more worthwhile experience.
Doodle is registered in her new school and we may even be able to pull a few strings and get her into the same class as her new friend down the street.
Joe, used to foisting himself to center-stage, is taking Doodle’s new friend in stride. In the last few years, all her play friends were boys so he could easily lure their attention away from her with talk of cars, construction equipment, and sword-fighting. Not so now.
The other night he tired desperately to wedge his way into their closed-door giggle-fest with offers to act as “Prince” to what he must have assumed was a “Princess” tale — because he’s learned: little girls like Princess things. He even drew pictures for them and slid them under the door. He brought them cold beverages and other enticements. But ultimately he was unsuccessful, and told me as much. So we went and did “dude” things, like playing checkers with chess pieces (where he changes the rules as we go along to favor the position of his players — a sort of chess strategy applied to checkers — the kid is destined to be a lawyer). As many “dude” things go, this devolved into the chess pieces smacking each other around. Then we used them to build a fort.
Lesson learned my son — when spurned by the Princesses, trust your buddies to help you find idle distractions to regain your energy so you can make another charge at the castle!
