Home Design Almost Complete
// November 12th, 2005 // Life
Our home design plans are about 90% complete. We’re very happy with how things have gone so far. We had to sacrifice only a couple of the lower priority items in the interest of cost-savings. We still have more on our list of things we could cut if necessary after our builder gets bids. Next week we should have all the elevations, a roof plan, and a brick count.
The architect is wrapping up what will hopefully be the last of the major changes and our builder is ordering a plot survey to see how the house will sit on the land and be sure it all fits.
The big perks for us are a big kitchen that’s open to both a large morning room and the family room. It also has a 4′x8′ island with a built-in sink and dishwasher. The other biggie is my office is secluded and has a great view to both the large, wraparound rear patio and to the open side of the house that looks through the iron fence.
The neat, and perhaps obvious, thing about designing your own home is that, within certain parameters, you can make every room, door, hallway, light, floor, wall, …everything… exactly the way you want it. I’m sure when it’s all done there’ll be things we wished we’d done differently – there always is – but it’ll be as close as we can get having never done it before, and that is exciting.
